GNU Free Documentation License How do hummingbirds survive the flight across the gulf of Mexico? Q. I have read that hummers need to eat once an hour or they will starve. Is this true?? It muct take them longer than an hour to cross the gulf. Asked by Springer - Tue Sep 11 07:34:00 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. First, not all hummingbird species migrate across the Gulf of Mexico. Most the migration information is on the ruby-throated hummingbird, Archilochus colubris. It appears there are two paths across the Gulf, one from Florida to the Yucatan another along the coastal areas from Texas through Central America in to South America. It seems the ruby does not make the 500 mile trip across the Gulf of Mexico. What other effects will there be? Thanks, Tim D, that's really informative (and reassuring - I live in England and am aware of how the Gulf Stream moderates our climate. The ocean current known as the Gulf Stream warms the UK and north-west Europe with warm water carried northwards from the Caribbean. Without the Gulf Stream, temperatures in the UK and north-west Europe would be five degrees centigrade or so cooler, with bitter winters at least as fierce as those of the so-called Little Ice Age in the 17th to 19th centuries. As it approaches the Arctic, the Gulf Stream loses heat and meets the icy Arctic waters, cools and sinks beneath the Nordic seas between Norway and Greenland, heading south again, but this time deep below the surface. At the tropics the warmer waters cause the current to rise and it turns and begins its journey north again. This is known as the North Atlantic Meridional Overturning… [cont.] Answered by Tim D - Tue Jan 1 10:31:16 2008 What is the country formerly called persia that lies between the caspian sea and the persian gulf?
