How much does your history class really teach you about history?
Q. I mean general history, not just American history. From what I've heard you don't really get taught a lot about other histories, like French, Indian, Canadian, etc., unless it comes to play a part of American history. Like I'm sure when learning about the 2 world wars, you'll hear a bit about German history, eh? But what about besides that? You don't learn anything else about German history, do you? I already do my own studying, but I think schools should start to teach kids about more than just American history in history class. Otherwise it's not really living up to its name, now is it? Personally I would like it if in order to pass history class, you had to learn about American history, and also another foreign history of your choice.… [cont.]

A. Personally I don't think kids get taught enough history period, there's a huge percentage of American kids who don't know when World War II was or what the Great Depression was all about. Our problem was pretty much the opposite, when we were in school they taught us multiculturalism and all histories except American history. I don't want to sound like a patriotic stooge, but I just found it interesting there was a district out there that was the opposite. But you are right, kids need foreign history as well otherwise they won't grow up very knowledgeably about the world out there (and we aren't very isolated anymore). Perhaps a general world history course would bring about samples of cultural histories from across the world to at least… [cont.]

Inconvenient truths about German history and the 2nd World War ?
Q. It is said that the 'winner writes history'. As a student of North American history, I grew up knowing the many truths that were told to me about World War II. During the past 20 years some truths came to light. 1. That Germany prior to the 2nd world war became a center for the immorals of Europe. 2. That most of the Jews in Germany at the time, were put into housing projects because most of them refused to fight for Germany, because of religious values ? Have you heard anything about these and other truths that are seldom mentioned...ie the truths not spoken... the light: The Rainbow of Truth.
Asked by Caesar J. B. Squitti - Sat Jul 7 16:29:49 2007 - - 8 Answers - 1 Comments
A. Unfortunately, anyone can write history and declare it as truth. A student of history needs to research carefully as to where some of this information comes from. As to a couple of your "truths (that) came to light": 1. I haven't heard of this before, but it bears looking into. 2. This sounds more like truth, because of the historical actions of Jews in different countries. They wanted to run their businesses, support their families, educate their children, etc. Fighting was not in their moral make-up.

Q. I would say the English, but I need all the input I can use, from you German descendants, Irish, Italians, Africans, French, etc...This is a Social Studies question. A. German is the predominant ancestry amongst Americans, followed by Irish and French. If you're talking "North Americans", then French and Spanish (for Canada and Mexico) would be the obvious answers.

I mean my book mentions all about women in baseball but decides that 11,000 detained entirely innocent German Americans deserve not a single sentence??? A lot of the people detained were even born in America. What is this garbage being taught to students nowadays? my college book is "A people a Nation" the author Norton Lee - I think your on the money. how many civillians has the american military killed in thier history, starting with the red indians?
Q. as far as i can see america is the most evil empire thats existed and still does, they meddle in politics of countires thousands of miles away from them.they arm terrorists to try and destroy their countires and thier economies.if you add up all the civilloians they have killed in thier evil history the answer would be in thier millions, from the red indians, to the black slaves, chinese slave labourers, bombing german civillian population IN the second world war,e.g dresden, japan with the two atomic bombs, korea, vietnam, libia yans, iraq's through sanctions then the war, who else is next?Mind u the funny thing is, all the civillains that i hve mentioned are non white,Hmmm i wonder if america has a history worse then the nazi.S?

To what extent do you learn U.S. History in Europe?
Q. Just wondering... Here (in the U.S.) we kind of blanket European History into a couple of classes - like there's no French History class, German History class, etc because European History is a lot of times so interrelated. But - the U.S. is just one country, so I don't know why you would devote a class specifically to it unless you live there. Is there like a general American History that covers North and South American countries?

A. Hummm..Interesting As I have Austrian citizenship as well as American I can tell you they are vastly different. I never went to secondary school there of course but I can tell you that European history is so vast-compared to North and South America. Basically, they got about 4000 years on us here in the states-in some form or another. It is important that although most of Europe is some form of democracy-they are not Capitalist as we are here. For the most part anything American is frowned upon by the establishment. On the other hand the kids,as you would expect, just eat it up-anything and everything American-fashion, movies, celebs(especially) sports, music and now American Television is more popular than ever. So, the answer is,… [cont.]

The truth, or falsehood of this statement about American History...?
Q. This was a statement by Pres. Candidate Mitt Romney. He essentially said:" out of all the nations in the world, there has been only one nation that has never taken land from another nation after a war. that nation is america. we did not take land from the germans, the japenese, we are the only nation to lose many lives and never take land. this makes america unique in the world" - mitt romney So basically you get the gist of what he was saying. This statement naturally caused me to think - as I have the questioning nature of an ameture history buff. Of course you first think about the American Indians, but thats maybe different for the obvious reasons. However, I then think about the state of Texas, and or California. Were these… [cont.]
